A Sneak Peak Into a “Typical” Springwood Cottage Weekend Wedding

As we celebrate Valentines Day, we thought it would be a great time to give you lovebirds a quick sneak peek into what our weddings often look like. Keep in mind each are quite unique, but this highlights the commonalities in the timetable that we have seen.

Thursday (and sometime even earlier in the week) – A typical Springwood Wedding, starts with the bride and groom (and maybe close family and friends or out of country guests) arriving on the Thursday, getting settled in and enjoying a bit of time together before the festivities get underway. The couple also do a walk through with us and discuss any necessary last-minute adjustments.

Friday – remaining guests start arriving in the afternoon, the bride and/or bridesmaids will often decorate the tables in the tent for the reception. Once all members of the wedding party have arrived, they will typically go through a brief ceremony rehearsal, then the couple hosts a casual welcome BBQ, Pot luck dinner or Build-Your-Own Pizza night for their guests and continue the merriment and catching up with a beach bonfire and s’mores.

Saturday – some couples have facilitated an early morning fitness class (yoga, tai chi etc.), others just let the guests do their own thing while enjoying the resort grounds – they go for a swim, kayak or canoe ride, enjoy the sauna or hot tubs, complete our Fairy Door scavenger hunt, play some indoor or outdoor games or go for a hike prior to getting ready. Friends and family help decorating the ceremony site and finish up any last-minute touches for the “cocktail hour” or other day of events.

The bridal party will usually get ready in either the Log Cabin or the Main House, with the Groomsmen getting ready in any of the other 17 cottages on site. The photographer will capture the “getting ready” shots and maybe first look & family pictures before the big event. Behind the scenes we are doing a variety of preparations and meeting any outside venders as they arrive to help them get settled.

The ceremony will typically start sometime between 3 and 4pm usually at the beach or on the Leisure Deck as a rainy-day back up. We’ll help bring some of the guests to the beach ceremony site and afterwards to the reception site by golf cart.

After the ceremony, while the wedding party and immediate family are taking pictures throughout the grounds, other guests enjoy a cocktail hour either at the Leisure deck or just outside of the tent, overlooking the marina. A popular activity during cocktail hour is the selection of outdoor lawn games that keeps guests entertained.

Once pictures and cocktail hour is done, guests will then typically enter the tent where the more “formal” reception festivities occur. Since we often get stunning sunsets, we encourage our couples to ensure that they plan for a brief escape during dinner to capitalize on a few extra sunset pictures on our docks. Dinner, speeches, dance and overall merriment continue throughout the night.

Since guests have been enjoying fresh air all day, we notice that guests start to pack it in between 10 and midnight, with only the more hardcore party-goers continuing much later into the night. As the numbers dwindle, typically the couple and their friends have an after party at the Main House which may include such activities as another campfire, karaoke or party games.

Sunday – Many couples host a send-off brunch for their guests, then clean & pack up. Some couples and some out of country guests stay an extra day or two to enjoy the resort and extend their visiting time.

Meals throughout the weekend are done in a variety of ways – some couples provide all of the meals throughout the weekend by utilizing caterers, others will take a more DIY – self catering route with friends and family pitching in. Some couples provide their guests with food baskets in their cottages, while others will simply advise their guests to bring their own food for meals that are not shared by all. The great thing about hosting your wedding weekend at Springwood is that you can decide on your approach to food (and other elements like décor, entertainment etc.) based upon your budget and the overall feel you want for the weekend.

As many of you know, we have been building out our wedding offerings at the resort. We believe that we have carved out a nice little niche, which seems to resonate with nature loving couples, who want to extend their celebration throughout the weekend with their most cherished people in a relaxed lakeside setting, and where no one has to drive to get back to their accommodations.

The pickup has been great, and as a result we just finished hosting four back-to-back weekend weddings this past September at the resort, each of which was unique, but all were amazingly beautiful affairs filled with much fun & love. A big thank you to each of our Springwood wedding couples for sharing this extra special moment in your life with us.

Here are some of the highlights from this season.

Most Memorable Entrances:

One of our grooms and his groomsmen canoed to beach ceremony site

One of our wedding couples picked up some of their guests by golf cart and drove them to the ceremony site

A flower girl started her aisle journey by sliding down the slide at our play structure and blowing bubbles through a mechanical flower shaped bubble maker

One of the Ring Bearers also came down the slide with a locked & handcuffed briefcase containing the ring in his possession

Happy Holidays everyone. Writing the year-end blog entry is something we enjoy as it gives us a chance to take a step back from the day to day and reflect on the accomplishments and experiences we’ve had over the year. While the first few years were focused primarily on updating the cottages, this year we focused a bit more on rounding out some of the service offerings at the resort.

I think the most impactful change we implemented was to introduce linens in all the cottages. We partnered with a linen supply company to provide us with laundered bed linens and towels, thereby reducing the amount of packing and laundry required when staying with us. At the same time, we also added high-quality shampoo/shower gel and conditioner in dispensers, giving another little extra added convenience to our guests. The positive feedback we’ve received from many of you on these upgrades is greatly appreciated.

We are continuing to add to our Games Library, which is now over 800 strong, giving Springwood Cottage Resort a unique value proposition over any other destination. To bring attention to this, we attended Breakout Con (which is one of Ontario’s largest board game conventions) and helped with Toronto’s CNE Boardgame Garage. This exposure has led to our first Board Game Retreat in mid January 2025, being run in conjunction with Changeling Gaming and Dining and Dragons, which we are very excited about. For details see Board Game Retreat. Stay tuned for more similar events to come!

Another aspect of the business which we have invested in this year is weddings and other similar larger events. We have now hosted several successful weddings in the late spring and early fall and have narrowed in on what works best at our resort, which seems to be what we lovingly describe as a cottage chic, weekend cottage destination wedding for approx. 60-100 people. The uptake for this offering has been quite strong, in fact we have sold out for weekends in September 2025. To extend the season and to ensue there is an “indoor” option to compliment the beach and covered deck spaces, we recently purchased a large commercial grade event tent that will be set up near the marina in the spring and fall.

This fall we also hosted our first film crew who were filming an independent full length horror movie, Greed & Gore in the area. I’m a horror movie/book junkie, so this was absolutely a thrill for me personally. There’s nothing quite like walking into a cottage to speak with a guest only to discover a “severed head” on the table or receiving “blood soaked money” as a tip. Just to clarify, the severed head was fake, Sadly, so was the money.

A few other things we focussed on this past year included upgrading the seating at our beach bonfire area to new Muskoka chairs and added several more loungers at the beach and added new signage to the marina. We have also been doing quite a bit of repairs to the decks at the cottages, which will continue into 2025.

We are also working on upgrading our website to allow us to more easily update content and eventually integrate into our booking engine, so guests can book directly online. To support this, we have had a photographer come in and take high quality pictures, video and Matterport’s of all the cottages, which will give prospective guests a better appreciation of the cottage layout and our services offered.

On a personal front, Ed and I have been working towards achieving a better work-life balance. To support this, we have a couple living onsite at the resort to help with guest inquiries and emergency services. In June, we also “swapped” our family cottage, which was about 45 minutes away for one right on Kennebec Lake, so we can be close, but have some reprise from the resort. This year was also extra special as both of our kids helped out a bit at the resort in different capacities.

As many of you know, Ed and I firmly believe in being positive contributors to our local community, which is one of the many reasons why we continue to employ several local high school students in their first jobs. This year we raised another $1,000 from “empties” which was donated to a couple of local charities and all the proceeds from the annual community garage sale which we hosted in the spring went to the Kennebec Lake Association and the local Arden Church. We also hosted this year’s community winter fun day over the Family Day weekend, which we will be continuing to do in 2025 and donated a weekend stay as school fundraiser in the Ottawa area. Ed became a Board member of the Kennebec Lake Association, and I became a Board member for Resorts of Ontario.

That pretty much wraps up 2024. Lasty, we want to thank you for supporting our family run business. We love getting to know and host each of you. It means so much to us that you entrust us to help foster your traditions, special events and holidays with friends and family at Springwood Cottage Resort. Wishing you all the best in 2025 and hope to see your smiling faces soon!

Happy 2024 everyone!

Its hard to believe that we are entering 2024 and have now owned Springwood for nearly 3-years. This is the time of year that we like to take a pause and reflect upon how the year unfolded. All-in-all I have to say its been a pretty good year, we’ve continued to make improvements at the resort, I think we’ve had a positive impact in our community and developed some good relationships both within the local community and with many of our regular guests, we’ve gotten a pretty good grasp of the business cycles and have a good understanding of where Ed and I need to focus our time.

This year we saw the last of our first-year summer students graduate high school and move onto full time jobs. Ed and I are so proud of our student staff members who we’ve seen grow and develop into this communities’ future leaders and we really look forward to continuing to work with youth in the Central Frontenac area and hopefully provide many of them with a positive first work experience.

This past spring we hosted the 2nd annual Kennebec Lake Association Community “Garage” sale, where we donated the space and our proceeds to the Kennebec Lake Association as well as the local United Church. This event has been a wonderful way for the community to come back together after a long winter. We also once again donated back the funds we collected from our guests “empties”, which amounted to $1,000 which went towards the local food bank and the Kennebec Trails. Ed and I believe very strongly that we have a responsibility to be good stewards in our area and these give backs are our way of helping keep this community strong and thriving.

This past summer we made a couple of tweaks to our summer programming for guests, including adding a collaborative “Wine Camp” experience with @winesbybrent and formalizing a Fairy/Gnome Door Hunt, which involved a self-guided Scavenger hunt on our property for nearly 20 Fairy/Gnome doors with an ice cream treat reward for successfully finding them all. We particularly loved seeing how involved our guests (young and old alike) got in finding the Fairy doors and working with others to share tips.

Based upon feedback received from local cottagers and guests alike, we added Nespresso Coffee beverages to our regular general store offering. My personal favourite is our Affogato – which is a scoop of ice cream with a shot of espresso, whipped cream and a drizzle of caramel or chocolate sauce. Trust me if you like coffee and ice cream – you have to try this Italian treat.

Our summer guests also noticed that we added 8 new beach loungers with tables to our beach, which has been a big hit. I expect that we will add a few more in 2024.

2023 was also the year that we invested in upgrading our internet. Our guests can now enjoy high speed, stable internet throughout the resort even while at the beach or docks for peace of mind if a work issue suddenly crops up or if someone in your family needs to grab their code for Taylor Swift tickets or catch the newest Marvel streaming drop while at the resort.

Finally, we significantly added to our boardgame collection, which is now at over 600 unique boardgames – rivalling many of the more successful board game cafes. Selecting and organizing these has been a personal pet project of mine as board gaming is a favourite hobby within our family. Some of the reasons I love boardgames is that it brings people together, teaches many life-skills, keeps your mind active and staves off boredom, can be done pretty much anywhere and is a great activity when Mother Nature decides to not cooperate. Its also an extremely approachable activity, in that there is something for everyone – young or old, able bodied or not, with so many options ranging from simplistic to highly complex, cooperative in nature to highly competitive, solo games to those that can accommodate large groups of people and themes to match all interests. We hope this collection brings as much joy to our guests as it does us, and just ask that they take care with them so that we can continue to share them for years to come.

In 2023 we also continued to do some repairs and enhancements in the cottages, most notably, we replaced the cookware in all of our cottages with good quality Lagostino pots and pans, as well as a set of wine glasses and a good quality Paderno knife block (with knives). We also added a kitchen shareables library with items like instant pots, rice cookers, air fryers, juicers, griddles, coffee grinders etc. so that guests may borrow specialty cookware when needed.

We saw the end of an era by finishing the replacement all of the pedestal sinks in the cottage bathrooms with vanities to give guests more storage space for their belongings and replacing the last of the red sofa beds in the cottages. We also started replacing several of the older bunk beds with new locally made, solid wood bunk beds that are durable, esthetically pleasing with a cottage vibe and are quite easy to make, since the rails pull off.

Our big renovation project for 2023 was an overhaul of Cottage 5. This has always been a super cute cottage but needed some work. We fixed the roof, updated the electrical panel, replaced the flooring throughout the cottage and completely renovated both the bathroom and kitchen. I’m particularly pleased with how the kitchen turned out since we were able to completely transform that space by removing an obtrusive beam and reconfiguring the layout making it highly functional and beautiful to boot!

Two other big projects we took on, had more of an impact for our staff than for our guests – we spent a good chunk of the winter organizing our maintenance building and adding a custom-built workbench with storage for tools etc. and we built what we lovingly refer to as our “Yak-Shack” – an outbuilding for our paddles, life vests and water safety kits. This made it so much easier for our staff to help guests get out on the water quicker with their safety equipment, since this equipment was previously spread about the area and not easily accessible. Lastly, we’ve started painting out some of the outbuildings in grey and some of the cottage doors/trim in our signature navy blue to help refresh the grounds.

2023 was also the year that we cut our teeth on hosting large scale events at the resort, including a few weddings and the annual LIONS Club BAIT (Blind Anglers International Tournament). In preparation for these events, we obtained white tables and chairs to allow us to comfortably accommodate up to 120 people on our outdoor covered leisure deck and set up wedding ceremonies at our beach or marina. The dock replacement work that we did over our couple of years also had a big impact for the BAIT event as it ensured suitable docking space for the professional fishing boats to park for the weekend’s festivities. These events went off without a hitch and have given us a great roadmap for future events – both big and small.

Looking ahead to 2024, our focus will be less on big renovations and more on marketing initiatives especially for our “off-season”, developing and fine tuning our Standard Operating Procedures and working closely with onsite staff, so that Ed and I can start to spend a bit more time together offsite as well as continued emphasis on repairs and maintenance.

One of the big projects we’ve been working on is providing some linens to guests. Starting this January, the winterized cottages will be supplied with new, good quality, down alternative duvets between Labour Day and Canada Day (so year-round except in July and August). We believe this will make it easier for our weekend guests to pack for their shorter get-aways, without putting too much strain on our septic system or short cottage turn-around times in the summer months.

We’ve also collaborated with one of our neighbours who has generously given our guests permission to use their walking trail, so we’ve created a year-round locally inspired nature scavenger hunt along the trail, which gives another nearby option for a short hike.

This spring we are expecting to add new signage at the resort – notably a whimsical directional sign near Cottage 6 and an overheard archway sign at our fishing dock. We are also planning on continuing with our exterior painting, yard cleanup and landscaping, general fixes and finishing the maintenance building organization and renovation.

Lastly, Ed and I would like to thank each and every one of you who have continued to support our resort and join us in this journey. We hope you and your loved ones enjoyed a wonderful holiday season and we wish you all the best for 2024 and look forward to hosting you! (here’s a little collage of our some of our holiday decor at the resort)

It’s been just over a year since we took over the resort. Every cottage has now been updated in some way shape or form with a lot of this work having occurred over this past winter. We’ve tackled repainting many of the cottages, updated a fair amount of the furniture (interior and exterior) or at least moved some around for improved flow/usability, refreshed the décor (artwork, some of the lighting and most of the window treatments), added new outside cottage signs, replaced and standardized the dishware and most of the pots and pans. We also completely renovated Cottage 4 and renovated/winterized Cottage 15.

As a former Interior Decorator this has been a labour of love and loads of fun hunting for those perfect items to make each cottage feel updated, but still “cottagey”, and hopefully being rugged enough for guests to use (but not abuse) ????.

Since many people don’t see the insides of every cottage, In no particular order, I thought I would share with you a few of my favourite things…

How fun is this? Who doesn’t want to play a few games when in the restroom?

The seasonal tree art pairs beautifully with the other nature inspired pieces in this cottage, including the stone fabric recliner chair and antique saw tree art

This copper décor was my mom’s and has been packed away for nearly 40 years – it was waiting for the perfect home, which has now been found

These two chairs are not only beautiful but also very comfortable. The cool blues and greens in these chairs balance out the warm wood tones in the pine walls and flooring

A heart shaped mirror gives little romantic whimsy to this bedroom

These sage green, buffalo plaid curtains have a rustic, contemporary feel that work effortlessly with the log walls in this cottage, not to mention this gorgeous pine chest coffee table

Slanted ceilings can be challenging, but this handmade mason jar chandelier looks like it was made for this space

These dishes are perfect – a serene neutral colour palette, a deep bowl for soup and cereal, a large mug for dockside coffees, glassware with divots for a good grip and cookware with good heat conduct, decent weight and great stay cool handles

This fireplace will be a welcome addition to this newly winterized cottage

Even the games at the resort were given careful consideration – our multigame table has coordinating stools, signage and a rustic base, while the foosball table is rated for indoor and outdoor usage so we can put it on our leisure deck in the summer

I hope you’ve enjoyed the little glimpse into “some of my favourite things” and that they give our guests some joy – just as they have given me during the hunt.

As we wrap up 2021, we’d like to update you on some of our most recent endeavours.

Firstly, we have finished getting our Games Room completed. We now have a separate guest entrance to the side of the maintenance building. The room has an electronic darts game, an arcade basketball game, a pool table, a shuffleboard table, a bar height games table, a multigame arcade table, a foosball table, a giant Connect Four game and a 100” screen that we can set up for movie or sports games nights.

Games room at Springwood Cottage Resort

Games room at Springwood Cottage Resort

We are making good progress on our Crokicurl Rink, and it shouldn’t be too much longer before its fully operational. Here’s a view from the Log Cabin of it being watered. We believe that this will be a unique and wonderful activity for guests and local residents to enjoy.

Similarly, the ice on the lake is now 6” thick, so our lake skating rink by the beach is set up and ready to go. We have even have a few sticks, pucks and nets for those that want to shoot a few pucks.

Skating Rink on Kennebec Lake outside of Springwood Cottage Resort

One thing that has always been important to us is the notion of giving back to our community. As a result, we try to ensure that we are using local contractors for project work and employ local youth and staff to further help this community thrive, and we look for other ways to donate back in a meaningful way. Since we took over in March, as part of our recycling program, we have been collecting our guest’s alcohol containers that are left behind and taking them into the Beer Store for cash collection. We have collected nearly $1000 throughout 2021 and have donated those proceeds to two local charities – Rural Frontenac Community Services ($750) and the Kennebec Trails ($250). We will continue to do this year over year and keep our ears open for other meaningful ways to thank this community.

On behalf of our Springwood family, we would like to wish you and yours a wonderful holiday season and all the best for 2022 – may you all enjoy a healthy, happy and prosperous year ahead.

Well, we survived our first summer peak season and are now in the last throws of fall before our resort and the surrounding area is painted white with snow. So far things have been going quite well and over the summer we managed to learn lots, get organized, hired a fabulous team and in general developed a decent weekly groove as the season progressed.

We welcomed many new guests that had never been to the area or to Springwood and hosted several of Springwood’s regular guests, many of whom have been coming here for several years – including a few who have been to the area year over year since the 1960s. Hearing some of the tales of this place and the transformations it has taken over the years has been purely magical. A couple of people even told us about how in some of the cottages the walls were used as a time capsule of sorts with guests signing their names and the year they were here – it wouldn’t surprise us if some of those are still existing under the drywall or pine tongue and groove. We’re hoping in time to collect some pictures of the resort throughout the years and set up a historical wall at the resort to honour its past incarnations. (If you are reading this and have some pictures to share, please contact us).

We really appreciated the warm welcome and feedback we received from both the community and new and old guests alike. It seems that the scooped ice cream, new beds, outdoor games and our “share shed” have been a big hit.

Inside of the share shed, filled with books, DVDs, games, and puzzles

We’re now getting ready for the winter season. A property this size takes a ton of effort to prepare for the winter, but with the help of our terrific team we are getting through it, and we believe that next year will go even smoother as we continually learn and become more efficient.

As we set our sights on the months ahead, we’ve started enacting a few of our plans. First, we have refreshed the inside of Cottage 4 – we laid a new floor, put in a new kitchen and some new bathroom fixtures – still waiting on the new appliances, which of course are delayed due to COVID (no surprize there). We’re hoping to tackle more cottages this winter in the same manner.

Inside of Cottage 4’s living room post renovation

Inside of Cottage 4’s kitchen post renovation

We’ve also been focussed on trying to ensure that guests who visit Springwood in the prime winter season can continue to enjoy a similarly extensive offering as they would in the summer months. To that end, we’ve been setting up an indoor games room, with a multi-game arcade table, a pool table, an electronic darts game, a shuffleboard table, a basketball arcade game and a foosball table, which we hope to have fully open for guests to use by Christmas (access will be subject to any covid restrictions, including indoor mask and proof of vaccine coverage mandates etc.)

This winter we’ll also have 2 ice fishing huts available for rent on our lake for guests (a 2-person and a 4-person). We have secured a number of snowshoes that are ready for guests to borrow to explore the nearby Kennebec trails and we intend on maintaining an ice rink in front of the marina on the lake, which should be lots of fun, weather permitting.

But what we’re most excited about is that we have been hard at work planning and preparing a Crokicurl rink, which we will be setting up by the Log Cabin at our Marina. For those of you who don’t know what Crokicurl is, its basically a 50’ crokinole “board” set up on ice ala curling fashion (if Curling and Crokinole had a baby this is what they would have). You can learn all about it here: https://www.cbc.ca/kidscbc2/the-feed/canada-invents-a-new-game-introducing-crokicurl. This will be brand new for Arden and we hope folks will come check it out.

We’ve added an extra large, top-of-the-line, Traeger Smoker to our BBQ/Leisure deck, so that guests can “up their BBQ culinary game”, this will be available to book for a small fee upon check-in on a first come first serve basis.

Lastly, we have gone through a rebalancing of the rates and posted our new 2022 pricing, which factors in permanent hot tubs at some of the cottages, rather than adding rental fees for them and moving them around from unit to unit. As part of the rebalancing, we have reduced some of our nightly rates for shorter stays in the non-summer season, to make weekend getaways at Springwood Cottage Resort more feasible for many.

Want to close this by thanking all of the guests who have stayed with us since the beginning of March, it’s been wonderful getting to know you and your support has been greatly appreciated. In particular, we wish to thank those of you who have already rebooked for 2022, we’re looking forward to seeing you again. While many of our cottages are fully booked in July and the first half of August 2022, we still have lots of availability in the early summer (May/June) and from August 20, 2022 onwards and a small smattering of cottages in some of the other weeks in July and August. If you or someone you know is considering a family getaway next year, please contact us.
